2023 Rare Epilepsy Partnership Award
CURE Epilepsy chose Ring14 USA to be a partner for its Rare Epilepsy Partnership Award. Together, we will co-fund a 1 year/$100,000 grant to support the development of necessary research tools, techniques, model systems, and data collection platforms to stimulate and accelerate research on rare epilepsies. Applications must focus on one or more of the specific rare epilepsies that are represented by each group as well as address CURE Epilepsy’s mission to cure epilepsy.
Please refer to the Request for Proposals for an overview of the priority areas, application instructions, and FAQs.
Ring14 research priorities include:
- Identifying novel techniques to generate stable iPSC Ring14 chromosome lines. Current approaches to generating Ring14 iPSC lines result in unstable ring chromosomes that do not allow for the effective study of Ring14 syndrome. A key goal for Ring14 syndrome research is to identify novel methods that allow for the persistence of ring chromosomes for in vitro studies.
- Identifying causal genes and pathways resulting in epilepsy associated with Ring14 syndrome, including the development of novel techniques or models that may assist in such identification.
- Studies utilizing and expanding on existing databases for Ring14, including the clinical database managed by Ring14 International, the RARE-X patient reported database for Ring14, and the clinician assessments captured in our neurogenetic multidisciplinary clinic. Some examples include using available data to define clinical phenotypes, assess treatment outcomes, develop treatment guidelines, etc.
Eligibility
This award is available to both established and early-career investigators. Early career investigators must have a mentor committed to advising the applicant. A clearly articulated mentorship statement from the mentor must be submitted along with the application. See RFP for details.
Budget
Funding requests must be itemized and based on specific, milestone-defined scientific aims. Requests may be made for up to a maximum of $100,000 paid over 1 year. CURE Epilepsy reserves the right to fund only select specific aims or stage funding of proposals based on achievement of milestones. Budgets may include salary support for the Principal Investigator (PI), technical staff and/or co-PIs, supplies, animal costs, vendor costs, limited equipment cost, and travel to an epilepsy-related conference only if the PI is presenting his/her CURE Epilepsy-funded research. Indirect costs are not supported.

Early Career Funding with AES
Ring14 USA continues to partner with American Epilepsy Society (AES) to fund an early career grants, including Predoctoral, Postdoctoral, Research and Training Fellowships for Clinicians, and Junior Investigator Research Awards. If a proposal goes through AES’s review process and aligns with our research goals for Ring14, then we pledge to contribute to funding this research.
We are soliciting projects focused on Ring14 Syndrome and other rare neurodevelopmental syndromes originating from the 14th chromosome to improve treatments, quality of life, and the molecular understanding of these conditions. We are particularly interested in researching any relationship between epilepsy and the 14th chromosome and/or ring chromosomes.
Applicants will apply directly with AES and be subject to their peer-review process. For more information on funding opportunities and how to apply, please follow this link to their early career funding page.
AES is proud to partner with other non-profit organizations to leverage resources and make dollars go further to support scientists. Our partnerships have built-in flexibility to accommodate partners of all sizes and to allow both the partners and AES to decide whether a given proposal is the right one for their funds.

The next cycle will open in September 2023.
Important Dates: Full proposals usually due the second week of January.
New 2022 Call for Research Grant Applications
Note: This Ring14 USA research efforts is initiated and coordinated through our collaboration Ring14 International.
This call is closed.
Ring14 International is currently soliciting international research projects focused on the Ring 14 or chromosome 14 related syndromes. The projects can be basic or pre-clinical, the ultimate goal is to find a cure for these conditions.
The 2022 call for applications has been issued for one-year research project, funded with 100,000 Euros, with the possibility of a one year extension of funds.
To apply, please fill in the attached Letter of Intent (LoI), which has to be forwarded back by email to the Scientific Coordinator (crimi.marco@ring14.org).
Afterwards, you will be asked to submit a full application: the form will be as simple as possible to facilitate the review process.
The final decision on funding will be made by the Scientific Advisory Board and the Ring14 International Board of Directors in compliance with common standards of competence, impartiality and transparency.
